New York State Vital Records
*Pre-1881 New York State birth certificates are now available in a name index to 1,048 delayed birth certificates for events prior to 1881. These delayed birth certificates were issued for births ranging from 1823 to 1880, with most documenting births in the 1870s. Most delayed certificates were issued in the late 1930s and early 1940s to individuals who needed to prove their age to receive Social Security benefits. Copies of the index are available at the New York State Archives in Albany, and in western New York at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and the Rochester Public Library.
