Goal: Establish the library as a community center for the city of Batavia

Objective

  • Library is an accessible, safe and welcoming community destination.

Activities completed 2007
Improved handicap accessibility inside and outside the library building
   Rebuilt main entrance to the library, steps and ramp, with handicap
     access highlighted.
   Online catalog station for handicap use made more accessible.
Investigated space issues throughout the library building.
   Engineering/Architectural firm found to conduct space study.
   Restricted access to workroom, circulation desk, staff entrance.
Replaced gallery room wall coverings and new flooring added.
Applied for installation of security cameras through a NYS Construction Grant.
Expanded Wednesday hours from 9 AM - 6PM to 9AM - 9PM

Activities completed 2008
Improve handicap accessibility - steps painted for depth perception.
Space stude conducted
   Parking situation included in space study
     (handicap, short term, book drop).
Signage added inside library.
Lobby redesign - bulletin boards/mission statement/magazine
     exchange/Friends display.
Safety/security issues studied -
     custodian coverage added.
Security cameras installed.
Expanded weekend hours discussed and approved.

Automatic main door installed.
Space study implementation begins
   New book sale space created.
   Storage area moved.
   Reading room redesigned - more space needed

Window blinds changed throughout building.
Gallery Room doors (plans) developed -
     main entrance through library.

New Gallery doors implemented.

New landscaping.
Rest rooms updated for accessibility, safety
     and energy conservation.
Children's Room layout changed incorporating
     better checkout, usage of window areas, signage.

Desired Outcomes 2007-2011

   Second meeting room/book sale room added.
   Dedicated teen space created.
   Non-Fiction rearranged and easier to use.
   Coffee bar added.
   Local History/Reference rearranged.
Hours of operation expanded.
Overall attendance, circulation, computer usage
     statistics increase by 3-5%
Library building is safer.
More attractive, welcoming spaces created in the

Outreach services grow - St. Paul's School
     Literacy workshops for pre-school providers (GRO).
     Senior residences (SAGE).
Parent/Child Grant/pre-school literacy (GRO program)
     continued.
     Birthday books and banners added; Green bookshelves
       continue.
Freedom to Read cart for visitors available
     (foreign student summer workers).

     GRO grant completed/new grant approved.
   Story hours conducted at selected green bookshelf sites.
   Books for Babies grant applied and received.
SAGE initiatives continue - connection made with GCC
     internship program.
Expanded opportunity for visitors to use library -
     Freedom to Read expanded further.

     usage parameters.
Library acts as host site for 2 new area groups.

     American Cancer
     AmeriCorps
     Landmark Society
     Office for the Aging
Annual recognition of volunteers established.
Outreach efforts continued - ongoing especially with
     SAGE/GRO programs.
Adult craft programs greatly expanded.
Genealogy by appointment added.
Library applies for Affiliate Library status with
     Family Search International.
Planning for cultural programming with other local
     agencies (Go-Art) takes place.
     Ongoing planning continues.
Library programming continues as ongoing effort.
Visitor Internet Use Policy revised.

Future activities
Additonal visitor services studied such as short-term cards
     everyday book sale.
Mobile Outreach unit implemented.

     in reference questions answered.
Positive responses gathered from outreach sites.
Number of teens/young adults actively using the library
     increases by 3-5%.

     programming) increase by 3-5%.

New marketing techniques used - displays, children's room
     mystery bags.
Library programs and services continually publicized.
   Newspapers, brochures, fliers, posters, local radio and TV,
     web page, email lists.
"September is Library Card Month" featured in Chamber of
     Commerce window.
